Whutzthat? is a party game you play on your own phone, made by Whutzthat Labs LLC. We don't run accounts, we don't show ads, and we don't sell or share your personal information. This policy explains the little data the game does handle.
What stays on your phone
Game setup. Team names, player names, your settings and which cards you've already seen are saved on your device so the game remembers them. Names and your list of seen cards never leave your phone. The settings you play with are part of the analytics described below.
Face Off camera and microphone. Face Off uses the camera to show the judge a live view of the reader. When clip recording is on (it is unless you turn it off), it also records each turn, with sound from the microphone, for the Blooper Reel. Recordings are kept in temporary storage on your device and are deleted when you leave the Blooper Reel at the end of the game, or the next time the game opens if it closed mid-game. We never upload them, and we can't see them.
Saved and shared clips. A clip only leaves the game when you choose to save it to Photos or share it. Saving asks for add-only Photos access, which lets the game add videos without seeing the rest of your library. What happens to a shared clip is up to you and the app you share it with.
Age check for adult decks. When someone tries to unlock After Dark or an adult pack, the game asks Apple whether the Apple Account on the phone belongs to someone under 18. Apple answers with an age range, never a birthday, and only if the account holder (or their parent) agrees to share it. The game uses the answer on the spot to decide whether adult decks can unlock. It isn't stored or sent anywhere.
Analytics
To improve the game, we collect usage data that doesn't identify you: which modes, decks and settings get played, how each card goes (solved, skipped or out of time, how long it took, how many hints were used, and whether a result was corrected afterwards), how long games last, how much of your decks you've already seen, whether the phone is an iPhone Duo, whether adult decks are turned on, which expansion packs are viewed and bought (including the price paid), whether Blooper Reel clips are saved or shared (never the clips themselves), and crash and performance reports. Your device type and iOS version, and your approximate location, such as country, region or city (worked out from your internet connection, never GPS), come along with it.
We use Google's Firebase (Google Analytics and Crashlytics) to collect and report this data. Google processes it for us as a service provider under its data processing terms, which commit it to protecting the data at least as well as this policy does. The data is tied to a random ID created when you install the game, not to your name, contact details, Apple Account or recordings. Player and team names never leave your phone. We don't use advertising identifiers, the data isn't used to track you across other apps or websites, and it isn't used for advertising. Google handles it under the Google Privacy Policy, and it may be processed in the United States and other countries where Google operates.
How long it's kept. Usage events tied to the random ID are kept for no more than 14 months, and crash reports for 90 days. After that, only totals that can't be traced back to an install remain.
In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, the game asks before collecting any of this, and nothing is sent unless you say yes; that consent is our legal basis there. Everywhere else it's on until you turn it off. You can change it any time in Settings → Privacy → Share anonymous usage data. Turning it off stops usage data right away. Crash reporting stops the next time the game opens, so a crash in the meantime may still be reported. Deleting the game resets the random ID, so new data can't be linked to old data.
Purchases
The game and its expansion packs are sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles payment, and we never see your payment details. Apple tells us only that a purchase was made so we can unlock the content. If usage data is on, the purchase (which pack, the price and currency, and Apple's transaction ID, so Google can confirm it's genuine) is also included in our analytics. Apple's own privacy policy covers how Apple handles your purchase information.
Permissions
The game asks for Camera only when you start Face Off, Microphone only when you start Face Off with clip recording on, and Photos (add only) only when you save a clip. You can change these any time in the Settings app. If you say no, the rest of the game still works.
Our website
The Whutzthat? website at https://apps.whutzthat.com/whutzthat/ doesn't use advertising or tracking cookies and doesn't ask for any personal information. Like any website, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) briefly processes standard request data such as your IP address to deliver the pages and keep them secure. As part of that, Cloudflare may run a small security check in your browser and set a strictly necessary cookie (cf_clearance) that helps tell people from bots. We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits: it records which pages are viewed, the site that linked to them, your browser and device type, your country and how fast the pages load. It doesn't use cookies or store anything on your device, doesn't identify you or follow you across other websites, and isn't used for ads.
Children
Whutzthat? isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child has sent us personal information, email us and we'll delete it. The After Dark deck and adult packs are for adults 18 and over. They stay locked until someone confirms everyone playing is 18+, and they can't be unlocked on an Apple Account that Apple tells us belongs to someone under 18.
Your choices and rights
Because your game data lives on your device, you control it: reset seen cards in Settings, delete clips by leaving the Blooper Reel, or remove everything by deleting the app. Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU/UK or state privacy laws such as California's CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct or delete data about you, to withdraw consent, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We don't hold data that identifies you, so we usually can't single out your usage data, but you're welcome to contact us with any request and we'll help however we can. We don't sell or share personal information as those laws define it.
Changes
If we change how the game handles data, for example by adding a new feature, we'll update this policy and its effective date, and the App Store privacy details will match. The current version is always at https://apps.whutzthat.com/whutzthat/privacy/.
